Andora and its environs
Turning the back on the coast, the onlooker tourist that goes as far as the inlands, meets the plan of Merula, from the name of the river that flows through Andora. The plan is famous for its cultivations of olives and for its oil presses producing a delicious and valued oil, while the river, where different kind of birds use to nest, is an attraction for the bird-watching lovers.
From here you face the hills leading to the characteristic villages of the neighbourhood.
Stellanello is a rural village of the High Merula Valley. The five-pointed star that shows off in its coat of arms, reminds the statutes of the medieval commune obtained in 1305 and the government of the Parish in charge, exactly to five consuls.
The Pizzo of Evigno dominates the town together with Mount Ceresa.
In the woods surrounding the village, close to the Church of Santa Maria del Bosco, you can admire a downy oak, a secular tree registered in the book of the ligurian monumental trees.
Stellanello which is famous for its olive oil, houses every year a festival devoted to the extra virgin olive oil.
Conna that reaches a height of 320 mt., takes in a glance the wonderful ligurian landscape, running from the Apennines nearly to the Levante Riviera rich in olives and ilexes.
The village with its medieval construction, welcomes the visitor, and walking in the verdant woods you can still find the ruins of traditional shepherds' shelters, the "caselle".
Colla Micheri, spanning the edge between Andora and Laigueglia is crossed by the roman road Julia Augusta which was still in use in 1800.
This rural settlement of country houses among the olives gathers around the little church of San Sebastiano. On its front a plaque reminds the passage, in 1814 of Pope Pio VII coming back from his French exile. Colla Micheri gave hospitality to the Norwegian ethnologist Thor Heyerdal.
The scout ship and anthropologist dead in 2002 and famous for his trip across the sea on his raft "Kon-tiki" lived here for a long time.
Testico, roman castrum and fortified village, had a parted history as regard to the downhill.
It was during the centuries a possession of Albenga town to be passed later to the Genoese Doria family and finally to the Savoia realm. It was, for that reason a scenery of bloody wars between the Republic of Genoa and the Savoia realm. On the main square you can see a nice baroque parish church, with a remarkable painting of Lazzaro Tavarone , " St. Stephen's Martyrdom".
The territory is also a famous production area of excellent olive oil and Pigato white wine.
Getting out from Testico, the road scrambles on the edge with wonderful landscapes on the two valleys : the Merula and the Lerrone ones. In short time you reach the Passo of Ginestro (667 mt.)
where you catch sight of a third valley, the Impero one, which climbs from Oneglia, in the close Province of Imperia.
